Finding things and putting holes in them. That's about it but they're not bad at it by any means.

Is it really?

...

As you may recall, I'm the guy reading the strip that doesn't know D&D/Pathfinder very well, so that isn't a leading question. XD Sometimes I believe people like me are the target audience for this strip, given its focus on explaining game mechanics. ;)

Well They're the class geared for outdoor survival. they've got Full Bab like a fighter meaning they're accurate with weapons, they've got lots of skill points and a skill list that has a bunch of sensory, stealth and wilderness survival skills, and they get a bunch of free archery feats (they can also pick two weapon fighting feats instead). Low levels when you don't have enough money for a reliable food source they're probably the best class at hunting down a meal but higher level they're essentially like an archery based Fighter except they can actually see things and track them.

being a slightly more versatile ranged fighter isn't bad. not having to roll to use your cure wands is also fairly nice for out of combat healing when the cleric goes down, and some of the prestige classes that you can get by starting as a ranger are really powerful and fun.

The healing thing is especially good if you grab yourself a wand or two, because even if you can't cast it yourself yet, if it's on your list, you can cast it from a wand.
