"Surprises are your friends!"
Surprise rounds are how my rogue met his fiance. He was being chased by the city guard, and he hid in some house. That house belonged to a beautiful, single woman. During the surprise round, he kept her from screaming by pinning her wrists to the wall and kissing her, and promising to release her if she promised not to scream.

"If I scream, you promise not to?"

Poor DM. He just keeps trying to find some way of making me uncomfortable. Whether it's having the promise of marriage from a young girl and waiting ten years for her to grow up, or having an innocent bystander just flirt in the middle of a tense manhunt, he still has yet to really do that.

Heck, even the time he had my character's girlfriend be retarded didn't phase me. That said, I probably would have wrecked something in game if he had been too offensive about it.

And then there was the time he said my girlfriend had been transformed into this sort of anthro tapir naga thing. My... interests ae many and diverse. That poor fool had no idea what he had unleashed.

Are you sure he isn't flirting with you?

His wife would not like that.

Besides, he thinks it's a challenge to try and freak me out. He tries to describe things to make me nervous, but he is finding me to be generally unflappable... Which is odd, because I'm such a high strung out person.

I run a Scion game. Surprise rounds and one hit kills are my life since one of my players plays a sniper. He keeps his Willpower pool high and any offending Virtues low.

... the bastard.

There are no surprise rounds in Marvel Heroic, and if there is I haven't taken advantage of it yet. Though there has been a couple of times where that would have applied. Like when the group met a bunch of SHIELD Agents only to realized that they were rogue. Or the New Masters of Evil attacked out of nowhere and began to sink the Helicarrier with ease. Or when Attuma (Member of the New Masters of Evil) was sinking the west coast and as soon as they arrived, they got attack by Namor who thought they were the Masters of Evil thanks to Mandarian using the Influence ring on them. And all of that happened less than a month ago.

Edit: Oh and just last night there was a definite surprise round in a solo game for one of my players. Black Cat (Player), Dagger (Player), and Mach 4 (NPC) were interrogating Tombstone about how he knew that Black Cat had a sister. Long story but it involves Kingpin being a dick. Then all of a sudden, Tombstone gets shot. Mach 4 gets shot, and Dagger barely managed to use her light mastery to obscure the sniper's aim. They were then pinned down as Dagger grabbed Cloak, who was KOed when he got caught in a fight between Punisher and Moon Knight off screen which is also a long story to why they are fighting.

Dagger then tried to draw the sniper's fire so she can see where was. Cloak woke up and went, "NO!" And teleported everyone out of there to the nearest hospital. The problem? He accidentally teleported the group to the sniper's position (He was shooting them from a mile away on the tenth floor using an improv scope and Adamantimum bullets. Black Cat and Dagger went to go stop the sniper while Cloak stays to watch Tombstone and Mach 4. When they got up there, they saw the shooter was a hit man called Underworld and he was not alone. He had Spider-Man in a cage. But, the session before this, and before the Dagger player joined, there was fight with the Sinister Six that included Carnage, and he had spawned another Symbiote onto Spider-Man who was also wearing the Iron Spider armor. So now it was Black Cat and Dagger vs. Iron Spider-Carnage as Underworld bails. The session ended there because my phone died. We were on Skype which was actually very reliable for the most part. I get dropped a couple of times, but never enough to make it that I should be done for the day.

One of the things I tend to build toward in the FFG WH40k RPGs is the ability never to be surprised. Even with the shift in rules that eliminated the Surprise Round and instead had Surprise modify your Initiative Roll instead, it's still a huge advantage to go first.

Especially in our house-ruled version of the game, with no Wounds and super-high lethality.

Throw in a lot of stealth capability and it's almost a rare thing to have a combat go past the first round. A super-sneaky Exorcist Space Marine with jump pack, thunder hammer, and storm shield makes for quite the effective "Surprise!" leap from the bushes. Same for a super-sneaky techpriest armed with a pair of suped-up inferno pistols and augmetics up to his eyeballs (quite literally).

My best, though, was my assassin. Between sniper rifles and blades he tended to end even significantly more powerful enemies without their allies ever knowing what happened.

"Surprise!"
The initiative-modifying talents can get expensive, but it's worth it just for the looks on everyone's faces when you go first with a +13 on a d10 roll no matter how many others roll 10s. Our campaign was kinda rocket-tag though, so I couldn't be as stealthy as I preferred - but it's worth forgoing stealth to turn a Volkite Carronade on a phalanx of Malcador Siege Tanks and laugh as its Haywire effect incapacitates them all for long enough that the shorter-range Knights can close to effective range, that being over half the combat.
It wouldn't have worked if I hadn't had initiative to hit them before they moved too far apart for a single shot to hit then all, though, so that's surprise-ish. Getting the first shot served Ophilia well, even before she joined a Knight House - I detailed one of her achievements as an infantry sniper in yesterday's (Nov17) GL3.5.

No seriously I built a tiefling divination-school specialist taking advantage of its ability to always act in surprise rounds and a Bonus to Initiative of +10 at level 1 to absolutely laugh at attempts by rogues to sneak-attack the party.

And that is why you always use a long range weapon like a Barrett .50 BMG rifle. Snipe them from a hundred meters away, see how their initiative bonuses help when it takes them 30 rounds to get within range.

"Psh"
Only a hundred meters? Long range spells at first level are 10 meters longer. I am always in range. Is your anachronistic rifle magic because I think Protection from Arrows would like a word. So have fun spending your last few rounds of life dealing like 2 damage max as I calmly blast you.

JK Raxon I have been lurking on GL3.5 and this comic for forever and only the comic is better than your comments. Though in pathfinder the best gun does 2d12 damage but by the time you get in optimum range to fire it my wizards/sorcerers/oracles/clerics (I like a lot of classes) will have long since killed
